What is karate? Karate is a sport used by many people for fun, as a hobby, or many people take it seriously and become world champions of karate. Karate involves warm ups and stretches that progress into sparring drills, speed drills, kata, and many other exercises. There are important parts involved in karate, such as belts, tournaments, and gear, which set attainable goals, create challenges, and provide safety.

There are many belts in karate; originally, the white belt was simply dyed to a new color. This repeated dying process dictated the type of belt color and the order of the colors. The standard belt color system is white, light blue, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, three different types of brown, and black. And for each new belt the person gets a higher ranking and what that means is that you have to up your skill level by quite a difference. Before receiving a belt, a fee must be paid in order to receive that belt. The difficulty ranges depending on the age group.

There are karate tournaments held all over the world. Before competitors can compete they must recognize that there are rules and regulations to these tournaments. People from dojos from all around the world are able to compete with different styles and tactics. These competitors use variations of these techniques to try and win. Shotokan is one of the most common styles of karate. Shotokan uses quick but strong techniques to overpower and score the opponent. The people who compete with one another is based on the age groups, so one competitor may be paired up with someone with less or more experience depending on how long they have been training. A dojo is most likely to be competing with a team to try and win more medals. And may think they have an advantage against another team because they have a greater amount in the group.

Gear is an important piece of karate because it helps protect all of the student’s body parts and vital areas when they get hit. One of the ways to get points in karate competition is to kick on the head which is called an epon, so the helmet protects the head when this happens. Another piece of gear is the cup which is worn to protect a person’s private area, which looks like a cup and is also made out of plastic or rubber.  And yet another piece of equipment are gloves which are worn to protect the student’s knuckles and hands since karate involves a lot of hitting. Another important piece of equipment is a mouthpiece, which is worn to protect the teeth, as well as cover them when getting hit in the face or head. Overall is an important part of karate because without it karate would be dangerous.

Karate teaches its students mainly lessons like self-discipline, self-control, and respect.  Karate has many more pieces that go into it, but belts, tournaments, and gear are still some of the most important parts of karate.
