The doors to the O’Connell center will open at 8:00 am.  Here is a breakdown on what to do – please make sure to read it all.

  1. Remember that Saturday night is Day Light Savings time. Make sure to set your clocks ahead one hour – otherwise you will be one hour late for the event.
  2. Please make sure to arrive at the venue early.  This event will start exactly at 9:00 am.  We will not wait for competitors that are late.  Competitors that do not come when their division is called will be removed from the division list.  Remember there are no refunds for any reason.  Please do not contact us to ask for a refund.
  3. Make sure to review the Athlete Check-In list at www.KatsuChallenge.com to make sure all of your information is correct.  We will not make changes the day of the event.  If you entered incorrect information (like birth date or you didn’t check both kata and kumite) it can prevent a competitor from competing.  Please email us if there are any issues.
  4. If you registered for the Challenge, but cannot attend – please email to let us know.  We cannot give a refund, but letting us know really helps in the charting.  Sometimes when someone doesn’t show up it can mean someone else doesn’t have a person to compete against.  It also saves us time in calling the individual if they are not there.  You will still be qualified for Nationals even if you do not compete.
  5. When arriving at the venue - you may park in the O’Connell Center parking lot.  There has been major reconstruction at the O’Connell Center – so the entrance is in a new location located to the left of the parking lot on the West Side of the building. Go to the ticket window located to the right of the entrance to pick up the Competitor’s Band and purchase the Spectator Bands.  The Spectator Bands are $10 each and must be paid with cash.  Exact change would help.  If you are from Katsu Dojo and received the Competitor and Spectator bands in class – then skip the ticket window go directly into the O’Dome.
  6. Once you get through the doors – you must check-in.  There is a Merchandise window located on the right side of the lobby.  This is where you must turn in the Event Questionnaire emailed separately.  If you do not have the form already filled out, there will be a table to fill out a new one.  Once you have the form filled out – proceed to the Merchandise Window.  Give your Questionnaire to the volunteer at the table.  They will give you your t-shirt.  Please remember that you needed to register by February 27th to receive the t-shirt.  We do not have extra t-shirts so we cannot trade sizes – so please do not ask. Everyone must Check-In.  This way we know you are in the building if there is an issue.
  7. Once you check-in you may proceed to the stands to find a place to sit.  You may reach the stands thru sections 103-107.  It is straight behind the lobby. There are plenty of seats.
  8. We will start the tournament with the Kata divisions.  The first kata competitors must report directly to their rings by 8:45 am.  The tournament will start at 9:00 am sharp. We will be emailing the morning staging times and posting them on Thursday.  Please make sure to review the morning staging times.  We will not wait for competitors that are late.
  9. After that we will call divisions to staging as rings clear.  Please make sure to listen to the staging announcements carefully.  We cannot wait for competitors if they are late. Once we are done with all of kata, we will proceed to all of kumite.
  10. The tournament should be completely over between 1:30-2:30 pm.

The morning staging times for the Katsu Challenge are now listed below. We do not have staging times past what is posted, so please do not contact us to ask about other divisions.  Parents and coaches are not allowed in staging or on the event floor at any time. The divisions listed under a ring assignment must report directly to their assigned rings by 8:45 am.  There are also four divisions that must report directly to Staging by 8:45 am.  We will be starting with Kata competitors only. The tournament will start exactly at 9:00 am.  Late competitors will be disqualified. We will call the Kumite Divisions after all the Kata divisions are complete.

Please review the bottom list carefully to determine where you are supposed to be. We will call the remaining divisions as rings clear.

The Chojun Miyagi Cup is a sport karate tournament that has been held for ten years in the greater Miami area with great success. This year the competition will be held in Orlando Florida. The competition is held annually, bringing local and international competitors from the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and even special guests from Japan. The staff’s main focus during the event is providing a positive experience for all competitors and build friendships to last a lifetime.. To this end, our great coordination and organization has proven to be the most contributing factor for a successful event. We hope to bridge the continents and showcase the skills of our youth through competition. We want to support athletes with special needs and exhibit their many achievements. In addition, we hope to support our local athletes in their goal to qualify for the national team and represent our country and their community internationally.

This year’s competition will host a myriad of guests, most prominent among them is Kyoshi Seiei Hirata, 8th Dan OGKK and JKF Gojukai from Okinawa, Japan, Kyoshi Cleveland Baxter.
